10th Planet Bethlehem Brings Home 3 New Belts from California

This past weekend in California will probably go down as one of the most memorable in Finishers MMA history for a couple of reasons.  First and foremost, congratulations are due to coach and teammate Jon “Thor” Blank for absolutely dominating EBI 17 Combat Jiu Jitsu and taking home $20,000 and a shiny new EBI belt.

This event was the very first 16 man EBI tournament under the combat jiu jitsu ruleset and it certainly did not disappoint.  Thor took out UFC veteran Tamdan McCrory in the first round with a brutal armbar in just over a minute.  He then moved on to finish Gabriel Checco in the quarter finals with his fastest match of the night, ending by heel hook at only 38 seconds.  In the semifinals he met fellow 10th Planet affiliate Kyle Chambers, who trains out of the 10th Planet Freaks locations.  The Chambers match was his longest of the night, but he ended it with a rear naked choke at around 3 minutes and 23 seconds.  In the finals Thor met the Ultimate Fighter and EBI veteran Matt Secor, and used a whizzer to take him down and secure a tight guillotine choke to win the belt and the cash prize. You can check out some of the pictures from his matches below and read more about his path to victory at MyMMANews.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for the weekend, the squad members that were out in California dropped in to 10th Planet HQ in downtown LA for their rubberguard and leg locking classes.  During the leg lock class with Marvin Castelle, Eddie Bravo happened to show up and before anyone knew it Eddie was handing out two new black belts to our beloved coaches Zach Maslany and JM Holland.  The team knows more than anyone how much work these two put in to their jiu jitsu and their black belts have been long overdue.  Not only did they create one of the best jiu jitsu academies on the east coast from the ground up, but they have helped evolve east coast jiu jitsu by introducing the Finishers Sub Only and Finishers Open, and they both are constantly working to improve themselves, the school, and their students.  After breeding beasts like Grace Gundrum and Jon Blank, it is impossible to deny that these two know what they are talking about and are at the top of their game. Like they always say, this is only the beginning and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish as 10th Planet black belts.
